On 23rd July 2015 the Council formally abolished the Conservation Advisory Panel (CAP). This Committee was staffed by volunteers and met every 6 weeks to look at planning applications in Conservation Areas. It was abolished to save money. The Society undertook a spirited campaign to save this committee, but the Council ignored us and some of our local Councillors.
We have asked how much this will save, and await an answer. Without CAP and with the Conservation Officer post at the Town Hall also gone, there is very little that stands in the way of over development in Wanstead; well, except for the Wanstead Society that is!
A painting that hung in St Mary’s Church in Wanstead for over 100 years of Christ’s resurrection was thought to be a 19th Century painting. It is in fact a 16th Century studio copy of the original Guercino which sits in the Chicago Museum of Art.
The Wanstead Society has pledged to help restore this painting, expected to cost around £30,000. When the painting is restored it will go back on display having had over 400 years or dirt removed to reveal the beautiful colours that hide behind.
St Mary’s is hosting a music concert on 26th September 2015 to raise funds for the restoration of this painting. If you are interested to know more, please e-mail email@example.com
Wanstead High Street has been nominated in the Kennel Club “dog friendly Awards”.
