A painting that hung in St Mary’s Church in Wanstead for over 100 years of Christ’s resurrection was thought to be a 19th Century painting. It is in fact a 16th Century studio copy of the original Guercino which sits in the Chicago Museum of Art.
The Wanstead Society has pledged to help restore this painting, expected to cost around £30,000. When the painting is restored it will go back on display having had over 400 years or dirt removed to reveal the beautiful colours that hide behind.
St Mary’s is hosting a music concert on 26th September 2015 to raise funds for the restoration of this painting. If you are interested to know more, please e-mail info@wansteadsociety.org.uk
