Wanstead will have a little more foliage come summer thanks to the 10 new trees that have just been planted on Christchurch Green. We received matched funding from Redbridge Council to plant the new trees which brings the total number of trees donated by the Wanstead Society to 45 since 2000.
You may have already noticed some new trees that were planted at the Snaresbrook end of the High Street in late 2009; these include silver birches, London planes and a Turkish hazel. Again, Redbridge Council kindly matched our contribution pound for pound.
The new Christchurch Green trees are from a variety of species including sweet chestnut, black walnut, pride of India, foxglove, an Indian bean tree, a couple of tulip trees and a variety of limes. Keep an eye out for these newcomers and their fetching plaques next time you take a stroll across the green.
Fantastic trees planted-real variety so much so that Christchurch Green could become an an arboretum with its range of unusual specimen trees.
Alas the signs, being black on silver have been scratched out by some ill-wisher. Such a shame!
I was involved arranging tree planting & signs. The council are aware of issue & they will be replaced. Wrong kind of paint used!
