Wanstead Police Station - under threat of closure

Decision to be made on Wanstead Police Station in September 2012

Borough Commander Sue Williams will be forced to make a decision come September about the future of the Metropolitan Police Stock in Redbridge and which stations could be closed and sold off.

The Borough Commander says she has little choice but to sell off some assets or face sacking police officers.

All of this comes as the Government admit that police numbers are now at a 9 year low.

As the Wanstead Society has continually campaigned for a pledge to keep Wanstead Police Station open, with a staffed counter service, it is now clear that – as we predicted – post Olympics will likely see our only police station under threat – yet again!

When the station closed last time, crime in Wanstead went up by 23%. Coupled with the fact that Wanstead has the highest burglary rate in Redbridge, crime is due to go only one way without out our community station and the staff that sit within it – and that’s upwards.

This is the result of the continued cuts in police budgets which have left Wanstead residents and the Police in a dire position.
