Thank you to More Italy for our autumn social

Wan Soc Winter Social 2019

Thank you to everyone who came to our social event on 12th November. It was a great success and we would like to especially thank More Italy who hosted us. The food and drinks were amazing.

If there are other local businesses that would like to offer us a venue for a Spring social, please contact us on info@wansteadsociety.org.uk

We have longed sought to enhance the local environment by working with developers to ensure good design in new buildings, planted trees in public spaces and funded gardening schemes across the area. But there is little point in improving the area, if we don’t bring the people who live in it together.

This year we held a summer social in the Nightingale pub, and a winter one in More Italy. Both laid on great food and a welcoming atmosphere, and we would like to say thank you to every pub or café that has held one of our socials. We are lucky to be spoilt with such good choices in such a small area.

These are informal drinks events with free nibbles and a drink provided by us. We have been overwhelmed by support from local businesses which have offered us rooms for free and discounted rates on food and drink. This is our opportunity to thank Wanstead Society members for their support and offer a chance to meet other members for a catch up over a few informal drinks.

playground 1On Saturday 16th July, the Wanstead Society was pleased to Welcome the Mayor of Redbridge in formally opening the Wanstead Playground. Our Chairman, Scott Wilding, has been a trustee of the Playground Association for 2 years working with parents and guardians to raise over £100,000 for this great cause.image2

The Wanstead Society donated £1,200 which paid for new pic-nic tables.

It has been a long campaign but its finally open. Scott Said: “My nan used to take me to play at that park when I was little, and now future generations can enjoy this facility. It’s a great bit of news – well done Wanstead for raising all the funds needed”

It is hoped that the play-park will provide free fun for kids for at least 20 years before needing to be replaced again.

Wanstead’s very own Fake or Fortune

GuercinoA painting that hung in St Mary’s Church in Wanstead for over 100 years of Christ’s resurrection was thought to be a 19th Century painting. It is in fact a 16th Century studio copy of the original Guercino which sits in the Chicago Museum of Art.
The Wanstead Society has pledged to help restore this painting, expected to cost around £30,000. When the painting is restored it will go back on display having had over 400 years or dirt removed to reveal the beautiful colours that hide behind.

St Mary’s is hosting a music concert on 26th September 2015 to raise funds for the restoration of this painting. If you are interested to know more, please e-mail info@wansteadsociety.org.uk

Christmas Party for Wanstead Society Members – that means YOU!

Wednesday 4th December 2013 – 7:30-10:00

Christmas is coming and to get us all in the festive spirit the Wanstead Society is hosting a get together in the top floor on The George pub, in Wanstead  – opposite the tube station.

The first drink is on us, and food will be provided. We hope to get as many people there as we can to raise a glass to our achievements of the past 12 months.

This is also your chance to come and meet the Committee, fellow members and discuss Wanstead centric issues like the Evergreen Field and the closing of the Police Station.

We hope to see you there.
